POWER IN UNITY
THE PROPHETIC DANCE MINISTRY OF
Mary Leigh Sutton
|Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand;
and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. Exodus 15:20
Hello, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Mary Leigh Sutton and I would like to share my brief testimony with you. Let me start at
the beginning. Before I was born, there was an attack on my life. My mother was concerned with having a healthy baby since she had
had a difficult birth with my brother. She seriously considered ending her pregnancy with me. However, abortion did not become legal
until two years later. My mother was scheduled to go in front of the hospital board to get approval to terminate her pregnancy, but
God changed her heart. She prayed to the Lord for a healthy baby girl. God answered her prayers!
Four weeks after I was born my mom took me to the doctor and they had discovered my hips were dislocated. The doctor said that I
may be crippled for the rest of my life and if I learned to walk it would be with crutches. My mom did not accept that. God promised
that she would deliver a healthy baby. My mom went to war in the spirit for my healing. The doctor decided to put me in leg-braces to
see if that would correct the problem. Well, after 9 months I came out of those leg braces and was whole and started walking on
time at 1 year old. As I grew, there was no apparent problem with my hips or legs. Praise God!!!
As I grew into my teenage years I discovered that I had a love for ice skating and began to pursue that at the age of 13. It was such a
joy, not only for me, but for my mom who was overwhelmed with thanksgiving every time she saw me skate remembering how God
had healed me. Little did I know that God was preparing me for more.
In 1998 the Lord led me to Dallas, Texas where He connected me with a dance ministry called Mahogany Dance Theatre of Texas
(MDT). Upon first meeting MDT, I was amazed at seeing a group of teenagers truly worshiping God. I had not known young people to
be this excited about God before. It wasn't for show, but it was for real. It was a bittersweet moment for me in a way because I
realized how I had allowed my teenage years to pass me by being far from God. But through dance, God drew me closer to Him.
For the next 8 ½ years I sat under the teaching and training of Dr. Vann J. Gilbert. Not only was he the founder and artistic director of
MDT he was also the pastor of the church I attended in Dallas. I began to grow and mature in the spirit. I had no choice but to step
outside my comfort zone (literally step out from behind the pew) and worship God through dance. God has used dance to open doors
of opportunity to minister His word in all places, from churches to schools and from weddings to home-going services. No matter
where we were, God moved mightily and powerfully.
The Lord has now led me back to the Atlanta area. I've been attending services at Power In Unity where I've been bringing an offering
of dance each week. It has caused me to step outside my comfort zone again and depend on the Holy Spirit to lead me. I realize how
God has used dance as a tool to reach me and now has equipped me to reach others for Him through dance. God purposed my gifts
and talents to glorify Him. I am a worshiper called to lead others into worship like Miriam (Exodus 15:20-21). God seeks the worshiper
(John 4:23). My desire is to usher people into worship, welcome the Holy Spirit and create an atmosphere for God to move.
Dance is a powerful, yet beautiful, artistic way to minister to others without using the spoken word. It's a universal language in
movement that touches the hearts and moves people into the presence of God.
If you would like to contact me, feel free to call or email me. God Bless you.
